Why should ever-increasing homeownership be a policy goal? (Op-Ed - NYTimes.com)
I wish this were a longer, more fully researched article rather than an Op-Ed because I’ve long felt there are some serious flaws with the homeownership ideal, and I think the implications for regional planning and economic development are real. I believe the country will be forced to densify, whether from confronting the impracticalities of too much personal space and fossil fuel consumption, or just increasing population, and I hope we can look to a more European model of coexistence by increasing all kinds of housing and transit options and decreasing the inane moralistic imperatives of real property ownership (for which many Americans are unprepared anyway.)
